Baking Magazine Step 4

Storyline/Double Page Spread

This is the next part of my baking magazine. I get to research double page spreads of baking magazines. I picked out three double page spreads below to analyze and take inspiration from. They relate to my planned magazine content because they include features, tips, and colors I may want to use in my own baking magazine.

1)

Content & Voice:
  • The article is a step-by-step recipe feature.
  • The structure shows a introduction, than ingredients, next numbered instructions, lastly tips & make ahead on the side bars.
  • The tone is friendly, encouraging, and instructional. The use of "Make Ahead" and "Tips" is helpful for the readers.
Design & Production:
  • The layout/grid uses a two-column layout on the right page for text, while on the left there is a "hero" image (the final product). This shows inspiration and instruction on two different sides.
  • The title has a soft font and the headers use a modern/more clean font for ingredients and directions.
  •  The color palette: the red and creamy white, and use of pink makes the double page spread visually pleasing.
  • Bright high-key lighting with shallow depth of field.
  • The balance is very good in this double page spread. The left side is almost 100% visual to grab attention, while right page balances it out with text and small photos.
Application & Creative Decisions:
  • Conventions borrowed: the use of the "hero shot" on the left to show the finished product before the assembling and preparations are done on the right.
  • Changes: avoid using too much text.
  • Reflection: the genre fits "lifestyle food" by focusing on the look and preparation. The target audience is home bakers or families. The representation shows traditional baking.

2)

Content & Voice:
  • This is a specialty baking feature.
  • The structure shows the ingredients and methods next to the product.
  • The tone is sophisticated. Phrases like "I adore vanilla" give off a personal feel.
Design & Production:
  • The layout/grid is asymmetrical, open layout. The text is placed in negative space of the blue floral background.
  • The font is classic and elegant in contrast to the golden brown cake.
  • Color palette: cool blues/whites.
  • The image uses natural lighting to create soft shadows. The blueberries on the table and icing dripping is intentional but creates aesthetic.
  • Balance: There is a good amount of text in relation to the images.
Application & Creative Decisions:

  • Convention borrowed: The minimalist aesthetic but put together at the same time.
  • Changes: Add more pictures than just one like in the spread above.
  • Reflection: The genre s gourmet. The target audience is people who like baking at home. The representation reflects simple and clean.

3)

Content & Voice:

  • The tutorial focuses on the cake decoration skills.
  • The double page spread is high-quality and looks very professional. There is also a 6 step photo tutorial on the right side, next to the product column on the left.
  • The tone is precise and professional.  The language is focused on "how-to".
Design & Production:

  • The layout/grid is 6 blocks. The left page uses the rule of thirds with the finished cake on one ide and a column of equipment on the other.
  • The font is strong and bold/elegant. This helps create high visibility/authority.
  • Color Palette: monochromatic pink and white.
  • The image  has a instructional photography style. It focuses on the hands and tools to show techniques rather than just mood.
  • There is also good balance between the text and visuals. Every visual has a corresponding text to explain what is going on.
Application & Creative Decisions:

  • Conventions borrowed: High-quality images.
  • Changes: Avoid over-crowding of words to assure I don't overwhelm the reader.
  • Reflection: genre is decorating. The target audience is semi-professional bakers who want to make their skills better. The representation is expert.
