Baking Magazine Step 2

Prelim Research - Openings and Covers

The next part of planning my baking magazine is researching the format and elements that go into the magazine. I will find three magazines and analyze the covers, table of contents, and two different double-spaced spreads in different styles. For this specific post I picked three baking magazine covers I would like to analyze.

#1 - Easy Bakes - cakes and puds (June 23, 2011)

3 design rules I can borrow for my own cover are:
  • Don't add too many different colors/fonts on the cover page to keep the audience intrigued at the main image. In the "Easy Bakes - Cakes and Puds" the magazine has pinks and blacks, this helps the cupcake stand out more and appeal more.
  • Keep the text to a minimum. In the baking magazine above, the cover page doesn't have much words overcrowding the page, making it seem simple and clean.
  • Lastly,  keeping a feminine color scheme. By doing this, my baking magazine will appeal to new and experienced women, baking from home.
1 thing to avoid:
  • By making the scan box on the bottom left corner in white, it stands out a little much so that's something I want to be aware of when making my magazine.

#2 - Baking Heaven (December 1, 2021)

3 design rules I can borrow for my own cover are:

  • In the magazine cover picture above the title is big and bold in a calm way. I want to make my magazine in the same sense. I will include a big title in a noticeable color, but it won't look like the main center of attention.
  • I like how the main dessert in the image is not centered, leaving space for text and sub captions.
  • One more thing I really like when looking at this magazine is the text that says "Also inside..." It gives the viewers a pre-view of what the magazine may contain such as guests, content, the types of features/columns, and tips.
1 thing to avoid:
  • One thing I dislike in this baking magazine cover is that the cinnamon sticks decorations take away from the main cake a little too much, so decorations should be a little more simpler.

#3 - Back From Scratch (November/December 2020)

3 design rules I can borrow for my own cover are:
  • In the baking magazine cover above I like that it says the type of dessert on the cover, I feel like it gives the viewer an idea of what to bake since it also includes the page number above it.
  • In the magazine it says "Holiday Baking Issue" I like that it focuses on a specific issue. This will definitely allow the people purchasing the magazine to see what the magazine is going to be about before they buy it.
  • One last thing I like in the magazine that is says what the target audience/environment is. "Home & Family's" - This might encourage at home mothers to buy the magazine or new home bakers.
1 thing to avoid:

  • Although this baking magazine is simple, it does not give off a "for new bakers too" type of vibe which may seem intimidating. A smaller audience base might buy the magazine which might not bring as much profit as other baking magazines.
